The form of the Vine Maple varies widely according to the amount of sunlight it receives. In the shady understory of conifers it takes on an open, loose shape as it spreads its branches like a ‘vine’ seeking sunlight. In the open, it is a small multi—stemmed tree. The leaves of the Vine Maple are one of the brights spots of fall color in the native landscape, ranging from yellow to brilliant red. (Portland Plant List, 2016)
