Lomatium dissectum 

Aka Fernleaf Desert Parsley

The Lomatium family (Biscuitroots or Desert Parsleys) includes many species that vary throughout the PNW with carrot-like taproot and parsley-like foliage, with an umbel of yellow to purple flowers. The Fernleaf Desert Parsley is one such favorite often seen in the Columbia Gorge in places like Catherine Creek. 

  • Plant type/canopy layer: deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant
  • Size at maturity: 3-5’
  • Light requirements: full sun to partial shade
  • Moisture requirements:  dry, well-drained soil
  • Growth rate: fast growing
  • Bloom time: March to June
  • Wildlife support: host plant for Anise Swallowtail and Indra Swallowtail butterflies (Calscape)
  • Native range: open rocky talus slopes and in dry rocky meadows from the lowlands to moderate elevation in the mountains.  Fern-leaf desert parsley may be found from southern British Columbia and Alberta south on both sides of the Cascade Mts. through Washington and Oregon to southern California and east to the Rocky Mts. of Colorado and Arizona. Portland Plant List – no.
